1,510 Turkana Participants Reached in Five Months — 76% Women

Building Livelihoods & Empowering Communities (BLEC) is proud to share a major milestone from our 2026 programme in Turkana County.

Between January and May 2026, BLEC reached 1,510 direct participants across Turkana Central, Loima, Kakuma, and Kalobeyei — 50% of our full-year target of 3,000 people — in just five months.

76% of all participants are women. 27% are from refugee communities in Kakuma and Kalobeyei. 40% are youth aged 18 to 35.

Here is what we achieved together:

Regenerative Agriculture — 310 farmers trained in bio-intensive farming techniques including mulching, organic manuring, and intercropping. 247 farming households received drought-resistant sorghum and green gram seeds. 2 demonstration farms established across Turkana Central and Loima.

Sustainable Water Infrastructure — 1 borehole solarized at Namakat Village, Turkana Central, providing 300+ community members reliable clean water at any time of day — eliminating diesel fuel costs permanently. 40 Water Management Committee members trained in water governance and maintenance.

Women's Economic Empowerment — 530 women completed financial literacy and business management training. 270 women completed gender advocacy and rights literacy training. 90 savings and enterprise groups — 360 members — are actively managing revolving capital across refugee and host communities.

Integrated Peacebuilding — 40 Peace Ambassadors identified and under certification — 70% women — certified by the Turkana County Commissioner's Office and Department of Peace. 3 community mediation dialogues facilitated. 2 documented resource-sharing agreements produced between host and refugee communities at shared water points.

This progress is made possible by our partnership with South North Nexus (SNN). We are grateful to every community member, partner, and supporter who is walking with us in Turkana.

The work continues. Our full-year target is 3,000 participants by December 2026.
